Navigating between linked documents/objects

In our structure, we have documents with assembly models/drawings, along with standard internal components that are linked from separate documents.  For the light (non-technical viewers), we want to establish instructions for navigating from the top document objects (assembly model, BOM, or drawing) to the linked component documents (models/drawings).  The most intuitive way to do this in my opinion would be to set up links in the BOM.  But not sure if this is doable.  Anyone have a system or approach for this, that does not include reverting to doing searches?
