Assemblies not updating to reflect subassemblies

I'm working on a fairly large assembly with multiple subassemblies. When I change a subassembly that change is not reflected in the main assembly. There are no group mates. If I try to manually update it it says that everything is on the newest version.

If in separate documents, you'll have to start versioning the subassemblies to have an effect on the main assembly.
