Improvements to Onshape - May 19th, 2023

Even LiveWorx '23 does not stop the Onshape team from delivering updates! This release includes excellent improvements to the Hole tool, renaming folders, and drawings.

GENERAL IMPROVEMENTS

RENAME FOLDERS

Folders can be renamed inline within the breadcrumb area, similar to inline document renaming.

FEATURESCRIPT SHORTCUTS

All Feature Studio keyboard shortcuts are now displayed with the rest of the Onshape shortcuts in a separate section accessible from the Help menu.

PART STUDIOS

SNAP INFERENCES TO ARCS AND ELLIPSES

Arcs now offer snapping to 180 degrees increments, and ellipses snap to quadrant points.

HOLE TOOL - THREAD CLASS DESIGNATION

Tapped holes created in a Part Studio offer Thread class choices that appear downstream in Hole tables and Callouts on Drawings.

ASSEMBLIES

SIMULATION WILL SUPPRESS NEWLY ADDED LOADS

When more than one Simulation is present, any loads added to the active Simulation are automatically suppressed in the pre-existing Simulations, ensuring no conflicts between the active and pre-existing Simulations.

AUXILIARY VIEW DEFINED IN LINE

The direction for an Auxiliary view can be defined parallel to the base view, in addition to the perpendicular direction.

"OTHER" OUTLINE SUPPORT

An additional keep-out zone is now supported called "OTHER_OUTLINE" that is helpful for some companies to label solder mask, copper pads, and cover layers that defy definition using other types of outlines.

MOBILE

SECTION HEADERS

Onshape for iOS includes section headers that separate Documents, Folders, Projects, and Publications as they do for the web version.

FILTERS FOR ANDROID

Instance search filters are available to find objects quickly by type and keyword.  This works on Part Studio and Assembly tabs.

EDUCATION ENTERPRISE

DASHBOARD

The Onshape Education Enterprise Class Dashboard has been updated to improve educators’ review process. It now shows Class Modeling Time, Submission Status, Time Spent by Tab, and Assignments Activity.

Remember: The updates listed here are now live for all users when creating new Documents. Over the next few days, these features will also be available in Documents created before this update.

This is a nice bunch of quality of life improvements - no real headliners, but still nice.

I'm a little confused about the Feature Studio keyboard shortcuts. There's a much longer, much better list here (which in itself may not be 100% complete - Ace has a lot of keyboard shortcuts):

Dang I was so close ! I made a drawing for an eliptical concept table a couple weeks ago and couldn't snap to the quadrents in my drawing. Nice to know that's possilbe now though.

A majority of those shortcuts are actually typical to most text editing and coding. However I agree that they should still be included. Yes experienced people may assume those shortcuts but I imagine at least 20% of people using feauture script are doing it for the first time.

@S1mon I agree. There are many more keyboard shortcuts in FeatureScript, and it is probably better to group them in a separate option or menu

Love the three point arc inferencing! That'll save plenty of time and headache when doing "full round" filleting in sketches.

A request for the hole tool: please, please add an "up to next"-equivalent option. Whenever I drill holes in a hollow part I have to do them as blind holes and set the depth directly - being able to have the hole go through a single solid wall and then stop would be a huge productivity improvement!

Great little improvements. It was only a couple of weeks ago that I asked about the section view, as I couldn't get the view I needed.
On another note, are the 'Project' Folders only for enterprise subscriptions?

I'm a little disappointed. Would be nice to see longstanding requests fulfilled; expandable size dialog boxes, remove all missing reference buttons, sketch relations manager.

How hard would it be for you guys to implement view rotation lock? Currently "supposingly" available by pressing the "alt" key, which dosen't work on Linux?

Code, Coffee, and CAD: A Day in the Life of an Onshape Developer, as told by ChatGPT.

It was a crisp morning at Onshape headquarters, and our hero, Larry "the Line Segment", was staring at his coffee cup. Larry was a seasoned developer, a master of all things CAD, and the person largely responsible for the upcoming Onshape update. His coffee cup was empty, a metaphor too apt for his current state of mind. 

"Three weeks," he muttered to himself, "three weeks since the last update. The users are restless." His inbox was a storm of requests, demands, and wild suggestions, each one more complex than the last. He had nightmares about geometric constraints. The words "parametric modeling" sent chills down his spine.

Larry had seen it all. One user had demanded a feature that would automatically design an entire spaceship just by typing "Make it so". Another one asked for an 'Undo' button that would erase their past life decisions, not just their design mistakes. And Larry was sure the person who requested a "coffee-to-CAD converter" was just mocking him. 

He looked at the clock, it was almost update release time. His fingers danced across the keyboard, typing out the final lines of code. His eyes darted between the screen and the digital clock, the seconds ticking away. His heart pounded in time with the mouse clicks. 

Suddenly, his office door swung open and in charged a team of interns. "Larry, the users are requesting a feature that turns their sketches into real-life puppies," an intern said breathlessly. Larry took a deep breath, trying to stifle a laugh, "Well, I suppose we could look into some sort of 3D printing for... No, no. That's ridiculous!"

Finally, the code was ready. He took a moment to review it, then hit 'update'. As the new features were pushed live, he leaned back in his chair, exhaustion washing over him. But his moment of peace was shattered by the ping of an email notification. He glanced at his screen to see a new user request: "Can the next update make Onshape predict the lottery numbers?"

Larry laughed out loud, the tension of the past weeks breaking. "Maybe in the next update, user. Maybe in the next update." He refilled his coffee cup, chuckling to himself. His job might be stressful, but it certainly was never boring.

And so, life continued at Onshape headquarters, where the developers worked tirelessly, fueled by coffee, user demands, and the occasional absurd request that kept them laughing all the way to the next update.
