Rib won't work about half the time

A lot of times, when I try to use rib, it just won't work. I'm almost always doing it on a cylinder, and I saw another post here on this topic and the answer was "It doesn't know what to do with the top on cylinders", but the solution was then to use extrude. There has to be a better, faster way though, right? Are there any general tips on using rib that will help me going forward? Thank you in advance.

When using the edge of a cylinder, you should use the Pierce constraint at the end that is coincident with the cyliinder. It works for me that way.
