How do you define and make non-circular holes?

Is it possible to define a custom hole shape (i.e. non-round, non-cylindrical) to make a hole in a solid?

    I will have to try this out once I figure out how to get the shape I need to extrude|remove to start at a point +z from the bottom of the solid.
