How can I delete part of a split surface (not part)

I have a surface which I have split with another entity. How can I delete either part of the split. Delete face deletes the entire original surface. I only want to delete the part inside the ellipse. This is easy with a part, but not so with a surface it would seem.

Delete part does not work in this scenario, nor does simply hiding the surface, which hides the entire entity.
The answer was to "Delete Face" with "Leave Open" set as an option.

it would be great if there was an option to "Trim". The only way i found you can do this is if you extrude the oval shape as a "NEW" surface, split the surface with the new surface then hide the surface you dont want...far too many extra steps.

Split the surfaces...
the result...

The 'Delete part' feature can be used to delete surfaces as well.
