Looking for help with joining two parts in the part studio.

In essence it is a cookie cutter. I have received some help in the past but still struggling to understand the concepts. I want to join them on the rim/underside of the cutter with two bars (for want of a better word. 3mm deep and 5mm wide. The inner part needs to be central both in length and width with the outer part. It doesn't matter so much where the connecting bars go so long as they are at both ends of the parts. I realise that you may have to get rid of some of the fillets to do this but would be better if I could keep them. The connecting bars need to be flush with the bottom of the cutters and project 3mm upward, the same thickness as my rims/handles on the cutters. Even if it could be arranged to Skype in or something like that so I can watch how it is done, that would be great. Not sure if that is possible with Onshape. I thought I had seen someone do it. I am a visual person. Thanks for any help.

Hello Stephen. The third dimension of the bars you describe is missing and I was not clear on where they were intended to be placed so I didn't attempt to model them. My understanding is that you wanted to center the two pieces in respect to each other.I created two new sketches; one one the face of underside rim of the inner part and the other sketch on the face of the underside rim of the outer part. The purpose of the sketches is for placement of mate connectors. While in the inner rim sketch, with the USE tool I was able to 'pick up' the center of the ends of the inner part. Using those points I created a construction line between them. Then using the POINT tool, I placed a point at the mid point of that line. That created a location for a mate connector for the inner part. I used the same method to create a location point for a mate connector for the outer part. I created mate connectors at those two points and then using the TRANSFORM tool I moved the inner part (and it's mate connector) to the center of the outer part using the 'Transform by mate connectors' option.- Scotty5

You simply neglected to fill in the Owner Part box in the Mate Connector dialog boxes.For the bars I created a plane in the middle of the two parts using a construction line from your original sketch. With the USE command I captured the top of the inner part. and I also captured two of he points from that sketch that look like the approximate positions of the connecting bars in your drawing. I created two rectangles 3x5mm at those points and extruded them in both directions so that the now existing bars passed through the inner and outer parts. I then boolean subtracted the bars using the inner and outer parts as tools and deleted the unwanted leftover pieces of the bars. I then boolean unioned all the remaining parts together.- Scotty5

Thank you again. I really appreciate your help but still struggling. I am one step further but using the Transform, I couldn't get the two parts to centre. Hi Scotty,
Thank you so much for your help. I copied your work, deleted the steps and tried to do them again following your instructions. I got the sketches and centre points ok but when I clicked the connector Icon and chose the centre point, it didn't do anything. Just stayed red. Not sure what I didn't do.

I didn't get to put the joining bars in at all but this is roughly where they need to go. 5mm wide by 3mm deep, flush with the bottom (the thicker part of the cutter) You may need to take off the fillets to do this. I'm not sure. There is still so much I need to learn about Onshape but once I can connect things, that is pretty much all I want to do from now on. ie. Make cutters and join them.

Ah! I've got it. Thank you so much. I'll try and work out what you did to get rid of the bits later if needed. Can I ask one other question re restraining drawings? Firstly, none of my drawings/cutters to date are restrained in the sketch area. In my case and what I am doing, is there any need to constrain my drawings? What advantage would there be? ie. What is the purpose of restraining drawings? I really struggle to restrain them anyway, as there are obviously concepts that I don't understand. However it is working for me at present without restraints.
