Hole limit?

I considered using points along with circular and linear repeats to create a hole pattern such as one used in a speaker grille or shower head. But when I select them the hole feature fails due to too many (> 100) holes. Short of painstakingly selecting < 100 and repeating the process until all are done, is there a better way to create a large number of holes that will remain relatively performant (I'm guessing extrusion + boolean subtract is probably just as bad if not worse from a performance perspective...)
