Tangent mate jumping to opposite surface

I have a student working to use tangent mate, but the item is going from the top of the surface to the bottom of the surface. none of the typical glitch fixes have worked. Unfortunately, I don't have access to the file atm, but any ideas that y'all have would be great. For context, this is a cam on an axle, and the tangent mate is between the follower/guide and the cam. The follower has a slider constraint between a hole above the cam and the follower.

My guess is tangent mate connector axis alignment, tangent mates can be tricky if another mate interferes with them and prevents them from following the correct path. If you can post the link to the file it would be an easy troubleshoot to fix. The other thing that has worked for me is to try selecting an edge of the cam to follow rather than a face of the cam, but without seeing the context I'm not sure if that would work here.

The edge of the cam worked for it. Thank you
