Re: Render Battle #6 - Coffee time ☕(Winner gets a real Prize!)
@MichaelPascoe I forgot what the prize was for 6th place. 😁
Re: How best to model a part for 3D printing
If you use the "finish sheet metal" feature, then you part becomes "normal" after that and you can use any of the regular tools that do not work on sheet metal geometry.
That said, if you are 3D printing the part there isn't any reason to limit yourself to use a constant thickness and you would be better off adding thicker regions for strength reason.
Side note but have you considered using the version tree and/or branches to explore design alternatives instead of creating a copy of your part studio (which becomes "separate").

@RenderBattle:
The hoodie prize was a success!
Will have to keep this in mind for future battles!

Looking good @sebastian_glanzner!
Connection problems at south america(Brazil)
I'm from Brazil, and the closest server from me is us-west-2 at Oregon that means it is over 10.700Km as I live in the south of Brazil.
"Japan is 10,700 km from my house(USA). If I had a direct fiber from me to Japan, the time for a photon to go from one point to the other is 52.47ms. Add the return trip, and your over 100ms already. It's also one of the reasons GEO sats have pings of 600ms+" -ulmatms at a reddit post
If I open my "cmd" and type "ping onshape.com" it gives me:
As I show above, It's a REALLY HIGH PING, you could be thinking, but does it matter when you are working? If your file isn't too big, like a square, No it doesn't matter that much, but if your file it's a FRC robot (like mine) YES it does really matter! Sometimes It takes 30+ secs to add a DOT in a sketch…
I'm not making this topic to say Onshape is the worse, NO, I do really like Onshape, it's really easy to learn how to use, and is not expensive at all, but it would be really helpful to have a server at south America, and I know that I'm not the only one, of course US has way more people using Onshape than Brazil or maybe south America, but is not 0, and maybe there is not that many, because people tell other "don't even try it, you have to wait 3 business days, to open a skecth"
Ps: I saw a topic about local servers, I think it would work! like I'm in a robotics team, we could make a server and use it but…
Above you can see my besties! 👆
Re: Render Battle #6 - Coffee time ☕(Winner gets a real Prize!)
Hi @MichaelPascoe , I've added you to the beta testers group so you should now be able to subscribe to and run OnDisplay, I think this is the link to find it:

I'd be grateful for any feedback, and I hope you'll enjoy it :-) !
All the best,

Re: Squaring Variable expression or how to square a number in onshape
@jelte_steur814 is correct — sqrt(#upper_x^2 + #upper_y^2) should work with units. Even better is hypot(#upper_x, #upper_y).
Re: How can I display a grid when I am drawing an sketch?
I'm not familiar with food4rhino, but it looks pretty similar.
fs.place is a marketplace for FeatureScripts.
If you have any questions, feel free to shoot me an email.
Re: How can I display a grid when I am drawing an sketch?
No grid feature still? Other alternatives to it?
Re: How can I display a grid when I am drawing an sketch?
ar·bi·trar·y, adjective, based on random choice or personal whim, rather than any reason or system
A grid is hardly arbitrary as it is based on whichever units of measurement you have learned to love.
Wouldn't the easiest way to make, say, a 4.25"x6.5" rectangle, be clicking and dragging until it reads 4.25"x6.5"?? Ya know, rather than making essentially an unknown size rectangle and then adjusting it using multiple clicks and keystrokes?
I feel like UI improvements should make things more intuitive.
I know Shapr3d isn't really a parametric program (or even a serious contender) but they did the grid thing right. It consists of very light gray lines, on the plane you are currently working on. The grid is 1mm squares and as you zoom in or out it adjusts to .5mm, or 2mm, or 5mm, etc. so there is no "adjusting the grid". The grid can be locked to the current increment if you desire. Snap to grid can easily be turned on and off. After using the grid to sketch or align an object.
Or a player can adjust dimensions by simply clicking on a line and typing in the dimension that one desires.
Shapr3d as a whole is a joke but their UI is king. I'm hoping they can continue to improve to the point where they can compete with more serious programs. Then I won't have to go on these forums or any other forum to try to figure out how to do a thing.
Re: How can I display a grid when I am drawing an sketch?
I am generally curious here. Can someone point me to a youtube or a real world use case explaining in detail the need for grids? Maybe I'm missing something that would make me more efficient.
