PDF drawing to Sketch

how does one use a PDF or some other image file as a guide to create a sketch? is it posible to be viewing an image and trace parts of it into a sketch?
Maybe im asking the wrong question...
this may have been answered somewere. 
just finished searching forum and didnt find satifactory answer

    A trick to help with scale - use a screen grab tool (such as Lightshot) to 'crop' an image to some known size.  Then after pasting in sketch, dimension the rectangle accordingly.
