Comments in Shared Documents: Tagging vs. Assigning

As a virtual instructor, I'm trying to determine best practices for asynchronous communication within a shared document. Any suggestions?
Specifically, what are the differences between assigning a task to someone in a comment, vs just @tagging them in the comment?
Thank you.

Tagging "pings" the person to get their attention, while assigning a task so adds it to their to-do list in action items with a completion checkbox. Both send an email notification iirc. The difference is kind of asking someone to join a conversation vs asking someone to complete a task.Get in touch: contact@alnis.dev | My personal site: https://alnis.dev
