Can configurations be forwarded up the hierarchy?

I'm working on configurable robotic cell frame & guarding. Is there a way to pass part studio configurations from part studio up the hierarchy to assembly?

There is a lot of stuff to cover in the configuration courses. I've spent about an hour skimming thru it. Can you give me a pointer on how would I go about this specific need I have right now and I'll go over the whole class once I have more time. Do I have to redefine and link each configuration all the way up the hierarchy or is there another way?
