how do I make a surface model into a solid model

I have a surface body and would like to make it solid.  I can't seem to find a command for it.

also is there a way to check it for gaps and bad edges?

Check out Enclose to form a solid from bounding surfaces and Thicken to form a uniform thickness solid. The commands will give you an error and highlight the bad areas of the model if there is a problem. Otherwise, if the input surface geometry is good, they will create solid geometry. Hope this helps!
