Does anyone know how to make a spiral around a revolved portion/hook?

I'm trying to create a candy cane, but I cannot figure out how to make the peppermint portion wrap around the curved portion at the top. Does anyone know how to do that? I want the spiral to be kind of like the ones on the on the straight portions of the candy cane that I made.
