Fastened mates in sub-assemblies gets ripped when used in main assembly, how to stop this?

Hi All
I have a fully constrained sub- assembly that is instanced in the main assembly. When I try to mate it, the fixed part of the sub-assembly is removed and mated correctly but the rest of the sub-assembly is then frozen in place where it was originally placed and cannot be dragged.
Any solution please?
Regards
