Is there a way to make the sketch plane unselectable while sketchig?

For reference. When sketching the grey area is a selectable area, as I am trying to select lines I end up grabbing the area instead and it's very annoying when trying to select chains of things. I have literally yet to have use of needing this area being selectable in the 7 months I've been using this software while sketching.

    If the aim is to select loops of edges, right click -> Create selection... can be easier than doing it manually.
