Mate connectors spontaneously appear and won't turn off

I have had this issue happen to a few of my students recently. We are working in an Assembly tab and all of the mate connectors randomly turn on and will not go away, even after hiding the mate connectors. It's very distracting and makes mating difficult. See screenshot below. Thanks!
