Moment of inertia variance

I have a question about the mass tool. I am trying to calculate the mass and moment of inertia of a part, and I am trying to understand what the variance means. In the Ixx, Iyy and Izz the variance is much smaller than the actual value, but in the off-axis directions the variance is either comparable, or sometimes an order of magnitude larger than the value itself.
What does that mean? Is the value not to be trusted? Is there a better way to calculate things? My sub-assemblies are quite complex, with lots of parts, but I would still need to know these values.
Cheers
