Long question about how to allow insert and delete to shared documents/folders

I am a mentor for an FRC robotics team. All team members have applied for OnShape educational acconts. I created a folder for our CAD. I created a team for all team members and added every team member onshape email account to the team. Then I shared the folder to all the team.
So far so good.
However, we have an issue which seems to depend upon whether a document or folder was created outside the team folder:
1. sharing permissions don't seem to work when the following is done:
a. student creates folder outside the shared team folder
b. student shares that folder to individuals
c. student then moves the folder into the team folder
After this last move step, it seems the students shared to in step 1b now no longer can insert components or assemblies into documents in the folder, nor can they delete things. So far we have been able to work around this by manually doing step 1b again after the folder was moved into the team CAD folder. However we think that should not be needed because the top level folder was already shared with the team to which all the emails have been added.
Any suggestions on this?
Thanks!

This sounds like it may be caused by the sharing permissions you set for the team folder. When you nest a folder (creating a new folder inside a folder or moving a folder into a top level folder) the nested folder's permissions are set the same as the top level folder. Check that the team has been given edit and delete permission to the team folder.
Alternatively, it's easy to create new folders and documents in your team folder. Why not have the students start their work in the team folder initially instead of having to move their work around? That way someone's work doesn't get lost and the team has access to all the CAD related to the robot.
Hope your season is going well!
Free accounts can only edit Public documents. Your folder is private and even if you share it with them, they won't be able to edit it because it is not public.
Thanks for the question on the free vs. education account - I'll check that.
