How would I indent a curved surface

I've been working on a helmet design and I don't know how to indent the surface without removing the material

    You're going to need to share a model and/or some images of what you're trying to do. 

    Just guessing, but if you have a shelled model, you'll most likely want to do whatever shaping of the indents before the shell.
