Just wondering if it's possible to avoid having to continuously right click and hit "update" if there is a new version available. Is there a setting where it automatically pushes the newest version?

Onshape's references are very robust, and you move move tabs around without any trouble.
Here are a couple places to explore for more information:
Working with Documents: https://jps.onshape.com/help/Content/docmanagement.htm?tocpath=Document Management|_____0
Working with Tabs (and moving them around): https://jps.onshape.com/help/Content/elementtabs.htm?Highlight=moving tabs
In-Context design (if this is useful for you): https://learn.onshape.com/courses/managed-in-context-design
Good luck!
