Cannot highlight an area to be extruded.

Oftentimes when I want to extrude an area the area is never isolated and highlighted, instead the whole drawing highlights. this is very confusing and frustrating. Please tell me as to what I am doing wrong or what I am not accounting for, please help. No drawing needed for this question.

Please help.

    The area you want to extrude should be a closed area, no gap,s between the lines

    As Dirk has said, make sure you have an enclosed area — which will be shaded

    Also, hide all of your planes
    because it sounds like you might be selecting a plane
