How can I add a flange to a rip edge - sheet metal functions

When creating a sheet metal model, I am working from an extruded solid, then selecting the faces to exclude and designating some edges to bend (which determines which will be ripped). I now want to add flanges to some of the rip edges, but the function is not working. I can add flanges to other edges without trouble.

Can anyone explain what I am doing wrong?

Have a look at this. I use a move face to pull the rip edge back before making a flange along it then a move face to pull the other side of the rip back to the start of the bend from the other direction. A variable makes this easier to keep up dated if the thickness changes.
