How do I place a sketch on an import part?

I was trying to place a sketch on top of the imported part. But it would not allow me. How do I place the sketch? Do I have to remove the vertices to place the sketch?

    Select the Top plane and a point on the shoe surface and then create a plane which you can sketch on.
    Or place a Mate Connector on some edge of the shoe and start a sketch on the Mate Connector....
