Issue with complexish lofting

I'm trying to do a loft on this shape...

The context around this is i'm teaching a lesson on reverse engineering existing items to customize them...
Any suggestions would be hugely appreciated.

Are you trying for a solid loft between the 2 items? OS will not accept a face with an inner opening for a solid loft. You can make a solid loft between two closed faces then a second solid loft (remove) to take the middle out. Open loft 1 and you'll see the error due to selection.
