While I am having fun playing with onshape for me the thing i want most is to be able to import public files from places like thingverse and modify them and then output the result for 3D printing. these are almost all in either STL format or sometimes they include SKP versions for modification and I am still looking for software i can afford to modify those files.
so is this a thing being looked at with Onshape? if not what is a program that I should seek out (OS X by preference)

That said, Onshape are indeed working on STL import (maybe they'll be applying some magic to make it directly useful), and there is/was a beta programme for it: https://forum.onshape.com/discussion/1953/have-you-ever-wanted-to-read-a-stl-file-into-onshape
SKP is the native file format of Trimble Sketchup, which you can download for free (not the Pro version, though).

and is marked down to $99 this week rather than normal $600
or they offer the 90%previous version 7 for free

So for the moment I can use this SE7 version to play with existing STL files
but I am fascinated by OnShape and its environment so I think I will be learning it for fun and future projects/
