Is it possible to save an assembled assembly as a single, related part and edit it further?

    Yes. I do this for purchased parts such as hinges and bearings. All the parts in the hinge assembly are excluded from the BOM but have full functionality as an assembly. Mates and degrees on freedom are maintained and parts can be edited.
