Extruding from a curved surface

I am working on modeling a violin top. I have successfully developed the top surface. My next step is to add the graduated thicknesses to the backside of the surface. I am able to draw a sketch of the shapes that represent the various areas of thickness. My question is, is there a way to extrude from The bottom of the surface using a sketch on a plane above or below the surface.

Yes. There are a lot of options in the extrude feature which should be able to solve your request. It would be easier if you can share a public document.

There's a 'thicken' option for surfaces.
