Can an assembly inherit the part number from one of it's parts?

I'll start with some background information. The company I work with manufactures perimeter guarding which (very simplified) is a bunch of panels of varying sizes. As our process currently stands, we have a configurable part file that we use to generate the basic panel structure. In that part file we have a featurescript feature that we use to automatically generate the part number for that panel based on how it is configured.
From there that part is used in a configurable panel assembly. This is so that we can add it into our final perimeter guarding assembly and configure as we go without removing and re adding parts.
To summarize: Part file (generates part # with featurescript) -> individual panel assembly -> assembly of multiple panel assemblies.

The issue we have is that we cannot find a way for the panel assembly to automatically create a part number. Ideally we would just have it utilize the part number from the panel part file that is contained within it.

Does this make sense?
