How do I copy a shape from one model onto another model?

If you mean copy a sketch, you can do that by right clicking on the sketch in the history tree and then start another sketch and past the copied sketch (right click again to get the contextual menu). A manipulator will appear on the pasted sketch which allows you to position the pasted sketch where you would like it

This is good advice for sketch to sketch.  My issue is in trying to create a sketch from an imported MK Step model so I can paste into an existing sketch.

Start a new sketch on the face where you want the sketch and then use the 'Use' tool to take off the existing geometry onto the sketch
