How to add comments on a SHARED document ?

Is it possible to comment (give feedback to students) in a document that is shared with you by your students ?
"This document was shared via a link and is view only" - is what it says in the document shared with me.
There is no text bubble in the document panel to type in a comment or note.
Do they have to share it different - other than the BLUE SHARE button in the top right ?
Do I have to add them to a virtual classroom to be able to comment on their work or assignment ?
