inability to view STL or STEP files on IMAC

Hello - i am unable to view an STL or a step file on my imac running macOS Catalina Version 10.15.7
The tabs say that the file was successfully imported in both cases and even show the image on the tab below. But it does not show up in the main screen where changes can be made. The main screen merely shows the coordinate planes. Any ideas on how to fix this?
