why can I only extrude the edge of the sketch? I want to extrude the shape obviously

I have a circular pattern of ellipses that I want to extrude cut from a surface. Why can't I select the shapes themselves to do the extrusion? onshape is only selecting the 'edge of the sketch'

    You may have Surface selected as the extrusion type rather than Solid. - Scotty

    It was something like that. I wanted to cut the surface, but I had to thicken it first
