How to measure shortest path between two points along a surface

Like the title says i want to measure the shortest path between two points along a curved surface... Is this possible? I am not experienced with any plugin and such so unless absolutely necessary i would like to avoid that.

One way would be to project a curve on the surface that is measurable.

With a simple surface, projecting a straight line normal to the surface may get you a geodesic curve. First create a straight line curve (you could use fit spline with two vertices) or sketch between the two end points and then create a projected curve (curve to surface) with the normal to target option.
