How to create a 'rabbit' or 'rebate' where two shells fit together?

I'm modelling half of a shell that I plan to 3D print twice and then fix together, back-to-back. Where the two halves meet, I want a couple of mm or so of one half to fit inside the other. In other words, I want to create a 'rabbit' or 'rebate' on the outside edge of one shell, and on the inside edge of the other. How do I do this?

- sketch
- use
- extrude surface
- thicken add
- boolean subtract
