How to go to Main

GerardGerard Member Posts: 12 PRO
Every time I open a linked document from the main assembly it seems to open the documents in a 'version' as likely used in the assembly.
Then when starting to make corrections, you find out once done, that you are in 'version' mode and need to move to Main, then do it all over again.

Is there a way to go automatically to Main, or is there a quick key to do this, instead of having to open the version history and move up. Thanks, Gerard

Hi Gerard, is it fair to say that most of the time when using linked documents you are finding that the reason to open the linked document is to get into the workspace, make an edit, and then reversion?

That's kind of the point of linked documents.  You link in a version of another document.

You can't make edits to a version.  So, when you open a version of a linked document, just click the "return to main" link at the top and make your edits.

That's what I suspected, but is there a quick way to go to Main?

In the most recent release, returning to Main is a little more obvious and a little easier.

When going from an assembly to the linked document, most of the time this is to edit / make corrections. When going to the document, I do not see a 'Return to Main', so wondered if there was a quick key or other means, then having to open the history tree and go to Main. Or show the 'Return to Main' as in Matt's comment above.

The other thing you can do is Double-Click on the part in your assembly - this will open the part in In-Context Editing mode. Then you complete your edits, and click the button at the top of the screen to Version the working document, and update the Version in your assembly. All in one operation.

Gerard, that's correct that we don't surface the "Return to Main" button when navigating from an assembly, as there could be multiple workspaces in brances that you might desire to go back to. Perhaps we can be smarter here, at the very least if you don't have any branches, about what option we show.

Thanks all. Double click and edit in context is not the issue.
We got quite a complex assemblies with many linked sub-assemblies, sub-sub, sub-sub-sub. Our top assembly can have +200,000 BOM configurations.
So building to top assemblies requires to go many times down to sub-assembly documents to correct minor issues or even updating the BOM product properties. Ending up in view only mode does not help, nor having to create a version of the linked documents all the time, but that's a different issue.
It would be nice to have a quicker way to get to Mains. Just a suggestion for improvement.
Alternative, would it be possible to create a custom quick key to do this, if so, how?
