How to configure parts when inserting *sub* assembly

jeff_mcafferjeff_mcaffer Member Posts: 64 ✭✭

I have a simple assembly that models a cabinet with horizontal fold up doors (kitchen | foldup doors question (onshape.com). I'd like to be able to insert this assembly into other assemblies and tweak the size of the cabinet and its doors. As I understand it, you can use part studio configuration variables to tweak parts (e.g., sizes) when they are inserted and assembly configurations to tweak mates when (sub)assemblies are inserted but I've not seen a way to tweak the config variables of the parts that were inserted into the sub assembly.

The more general problem is that a "thing" is the combination of its parts and its mates. So how do you create reusable "things" where the parts and mates are retained and can be configured?

You have to configure the sub assembly with config variables and set the values of your part config variables to use them.

Thanks @eric_pesty. Like most of the configuration stuff I've encountered so far, it makes sense once you know.

When creating assembly instructions with exploded views I end up creating many sub assemblies. Each of which requires manual duplication of the configuration parameters.

It would be nice to have a little check box that automatically copies all the config parameters of the parts to the assembly.
