Best Export Settings for 3D Animations

We are hiring an animator to create some training videos using 3D models of our products. We recently sent him a model and it acme across as thousands of pieces and it added a lot of time in post processing to keep everything together and apply correct pivot points. It worked, just more laborious than we expected.
Any advice on file types or export settings most useful for video animation?
