How to rotate a body along a Möbius strip?

niklas_thomniklas_thom Member Posts: 11 EDU

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to arrange a specific type of body along a Möbius strip in Onshape. However, when I use the pattern feature to distribute the body along the strip, the body does not rotate as it follows the path. I need the body to rotate correctly to match the twist of the Möbius strip, but I haven't been able to figure out how to achieve this.

Does anyone know how I can ensure that the body rotates while being patterned along the Möbius strip?

Thanks in advance for any help!

You can trash it and then restore it from trash to force an update.

Can you share a link to the document?

I really wonder if it is an outdated document. I think much of this has been there for quite some time.

Some more info might be helpful. Are you using the standard onshape curve pattern tool? How did you create the Möbius strip? Do you have a good curve to pattern along?

Have you tried a curve pattern with a curve along the axis of the mobius strip? There is a tangent to curve option.

at Oriantation I can only choose "keep Orientation" why could this be?

That's weird. If you're on iOS, maybe update the app.

Im on a Mac but in the browser and every video I saw on for example on YouTube shows the same thing as mine. Could it be that you have a custom feature or something like that?

I found out that in the video example from onshape there is no option for a tangent:

but in the next line "steps" there is shown that there is an option:

    how is this possible?

It could be that your document was never updated to the latest version of Onshape @niklas_thom. Or perhaps you are within an assembly instead of a part studio or vise versa.

I’m facing another issue with my Möbius strip design. My goal is to create slots for magnets along the Möbius path. I’ve only been partially successful so far. As shown in the picture where I’ve placed the magnets, the slots are perpendicular to the surface, but you can still see steps. This means the slots need to be rotated as well so that the steps disappear. I’m not sure how to achieve that.

To access the correct workspace in the document, please select "Möbiusschleife test."

It would be helpful if you made your document public. Then others could make a copy to edit.

Yes sorry of course, its public.

Has anyone made any progress on this task, or is it impossible to achieve?
