Pattern a part that has patterned mate connectors?

I am modifying the Intro to CAD Unit 3 lesson (lego blocks) so that my students are only doing 3.1 and then not setting up configurations. I was hoping I could just pattern the first brick and then make various colors of the same brick. However, it looks like I can select only the first mate connector to pattern with the part… the remaining mate connectors were created with a feature pattern, and I can't seem to pattern a pattern.

Is there a way to make this work, or is this a dead end?

    Options:

    • Make the Mate Connectors individually, rather than a part of the linear pattern. Then you can pattern them with the part pattern.
    • Just use configurations (strongly recommended)
