How to extrude perpendicular to a plane

bill_quinlanbill_quinlan Member Posts: 4

I have imported a STEP file converted with Freecad 1.1.0dev from a downloaded STL file, added a Sketch, and 3 Planes. How do I extrude from Plane 2 to Plane 3? I have no experience in CAD solid modelling, and I need a step by step instruction. Ideally I want the walls to be the same thickness as the existing part, so post Extrude I'm thinking that I could do a 'substraction extrude' (improper term) to achieve that desired result. Thank you.

If you have zero experience try the helpful videos and introductory courses at learn.onshape.com

Hey Bill. Welcome to Onshape. Generally, it is helpful to get answers relative to features in a document by posting a link to that document. It enables other members to understand your intent and the steps you have taken to get where you are. As MDesign posted, learn.onshape.com is The place to go to learn Onshape (and perhaps avoid some future frustration). - Scotty

Scotty, I intended to include a reference to my made public design, but I apparently unknowingly 'Tagged:' a link to my own post instead by entering the workspace URL into the 'Document:' field which was at the bottom of my post entry dialog. I guess neither comment realized that.

I did eventually succeed, I believe, in creating my part as shown in this public workspace:

The error messages for failed operations frequently say "… failed to regenerate…" with little useful guidance. The videos linked by the circled question mark in each tool dialog were beneficial and through much trial and error got me to my goal. I'll see how the 3D print goes. I'm sure the workspace process is less efficient than a more optimal solution. I assume if interested that one could walk through the steps.

I now see that apparently/maybe(?) my workspace is not viewable due to the dialog at the bottom left of my browser tab:

I believe that I made it public, so if that's not the problem I don't understand why "access is not allowed". The globe tooltip says "This is a public document."
