extrude upto next causes extrusion error

I'm attempting an extrusion that I'd like to terminate "at next" where the termination cross regions of extrusion, loft, and shell.
I'm extruding in both directions, and the first "up to next" works (to a similarly complex region), but the 2nd one fails. In my project, it is the "intake_ribs" extrusion, and I left the 2nd one as blind, which makes clear why I want upto next.

The second direction only provides an "end" for part of the ribs so "next" goes to infinity!
The simplest is probably to extrude "up to" the flat face shown below and then use a "Delete face" feature to get rid of the leftover bits sticking out the back:
