How do I rotate a Part 45 degrees in relation to some straight edge in an Assembly?

I am trying to rotate a Part in an Assembly and encounter some issues:
1) Whenever I click the part I get the mate points, no Triad Manipulator (the Part is already mated with other parts so I am trying to get the manipulator to rotate all these mated parts)
2) I box select the Part and this way I get the Triad Manipulator but I can't seem to be able to rotate at a different angle than 90 or 180.
Is there a way to achieve 45 degree rotation in Assemblies?
And maybe you know why I don't get the manipulator when I click the Part but I get all those snapping mate points... :-/
