Custom Material

don_howedon_howe Member Posts: 133 ✭✭✭

If I create a custom material within my part studio, in this case Honey Locust. It seems like I have to create the same custom materail over and over again for each part I create in the same part studio. There's gotta be better way and I'm just not seeing it.

In conjuction with this, if I select all my parts in my assembly, is there an option to change the material for all the parts at the same time?

you can make your own material library and add materials that you happen to use often there.

That way you won't have to create it each time…

In the asm studio bom table, add a column for material. From there, you can add/change the material for each part (assuming the part is in the same document as the asm). You still have to do it one part at a time, but I find its much faster to do it from here than the part studio. Plus, you can see at a glance what part is missing its material.

Okay this is a bit confusing: I followed the link in the help file and it opens up the materail file.

Then according to the instructions :

    1. Open the document.
    2. Right-click on the std.mat tab and select Export.

All I see is "make a copy to edit", is this what I want to do, because that's not what the instructions say?

yes that's right. that'll give you a template to change.

tip: get rid of the standard materials since those will be available through onshape's library and you just make a fresh library for your own materials. that'll save scrolling

Okay, so I created my material list or what I call my wood database. I upload this file to my documents.

I then open my part studio, select a part, go to edit the material, but my wood database isn't available to me. So I must have missed a step here.

If I click on "Show Onshape material libraries" all it shows is the Onshape Library. So what did I do wrong?

@ don_howe - I would suggest using "help" for this. First search "customizing materials" then scroll down to "creating new material libraries". Follow the step by step instructions. Sounds like you got the hard stuff done already. Good luck

Did you make a new version? Only versioned documents can be referenced

In the instructions there is a link to download a sample. So that is what I did. I open the file in excel, I add my materials, density, etc., and save the file and upload to onshape as you can see in one of my screen shots "Don's Wood Database.cvs." So I created a version. V1.

Okay, I figured out what was wrong. I think. My material database is now showing up in onshape document.
