Help modeling locomotive coupling motion

lisa_schulze581lisa_schulze581 Member Posts: 4

I have a High School student that is trying to model the motion of a locomotive coupling. See this video to get an idea of what he wants to create. He is struggling to get the motion to work. Can anyone advise what we are missing?

Cool project. You've got a few things going on that are going to make an assembly of this complexity difficult. First, I'd recommend taking the Multi-Part Part Studios Learning Center course. One of the most powerful features of Onshape is the ability to model many parts in one Part Studio. When you have part geometry that will need to line up with other part geometry in the assembly, modeling them together reduces the chance of mistakes.

Assembly motion will have problems if enverything isn't exactly lined up. In your case, you had a couple of parts which weren't fully defined. You also had a revolute mate on the edge of one of the short links, rather than in the center. You could easily model this whole thing in one part studio. Then, make sure you name the parts so you don't just have a bunch of "Part 1" parts in the assembly.
