Folding "sheet" on itself?

Hello.
I'm trying to create a tool to fold a sheet of paper/fabric on top of itself. The idea is to have flat pipe transit into folder form:
I thought a simple loft will do the trick, but it turned out to be more complicated than that - the loft failed.
Then I tried adding intermediate stages to guide the loft, but it still failed.
Next I've tried loft each stage separately, it worked, but boy it looks bad:
So, I hope someone could give me some tips how to achieve this
Thank you.
Here is my attempt so far:

Would this be a bi-directional fold? Kind of like a map? If so, then you could just take your sketch and sweep it along another fold path.
