Folding "sheet" on itself?

Hello.

I'm trying to create a tool to fold a sheet of paper/fabric on top of itself. The idea is to have flat pipe transit into folder form:

I thought a simple loft will do the trick, but it turned out to be more complicated than that - the loft failed.

Then I tried adding intermediate stages to guide the loft, but it still failed.

Next I've tried loft each stage separately, it worked, but boy it looks bad:

So, I hope someone could give me some tips how to achieve this

    Would this be a bi-directional fold? Kind of like a map? If so, then you could just take your sketch and sweep it along another fold path.
