Failure of a feature to regenerate after re-login?

I completed some work some time earlier, and everything was fine and smooth. But a few hours later, when I logged in again, a feature (a replace face in my case, which also triggered the following failures) failed to regenerate. What might have caused this?
And the spooky thing is, after I restored it to where I had left, and after I rolled to where the error was, the error has disappeared!
