Custom Feature: Worm Gear
Hi everyone,
I'm Younseo Lee, a robotics researcher at Seoul National University.
We use Onshape quite a lot in our lab, and I've always wanted to create and share a custom FeatureScript with the community.
Recently, I came across a discussion about the lack of a proper worm gear FeatureScript, so I decided to give it a try (with some help from Claude!).
The result is Worm Gear, a custom FeatureScript that generates a worm and its matching worm wheel directly in Onshape. And yes, it even supports double worm gear configurations!
The main goal was to make worm gear modeling easier and more accessible. Instead of manually creating helices, tooth profiles, and complicated sweeps, you can generate a complete worm gear set by simply adjusting a few parameters.
Key Features
- Worm and worm wheel generation with matching tooth geometry.
- Multiple tooth profiles: ZA, ZN, and ZI.
- Customizable parameters: Module, number of starts, gear ratio, pressure angle, lead angle, backlash, center distance, and more.
- Double worm gear option: Two worms on opposite sides of a wheel, allowing both rotational and linear motion.
- Additional options: Shaft dimensions, hub geometry, initial positioning, and interference checking.
I've also prepared a User Guide with detailed explanations of the parameters and instructions for using the feature, so please take a look if you're interested.

This is my first time sharing a FeatureScript with the Onshape community, so there may still be some things to improve.
I'd really appreciate any feedback, suggestions, or bug reports. And of course, I'd love to see what you create with it! I hope you find it useful for your projects.
Thanks, and happy modeling!
Younseo Lee
