2 Noob questions about multiple parts in a single parts studio

I've imported a model into a parts studio and began modeling a mounting bracket for it.  The problem I have is the bracket is somehow inseparable from the imported part.  I'd like to make the new bracket a separate part but can't seem to figure out how to separate them.  Here is the model

Next noob question, how to I make a new part and prevent this from happening next time?

Hi @gw_estep-  The answer to your question is simple- when you are creating a new feature (extrude, revolve etc.) you will need to select "NEW" in the feature creation dialog window.  Just edit your extrude....it should currently say "ADD"....this is the value you want to change to new.  

When you add features to existing parts....new feature body will inherit the color of the parent part (the part you added to).  

Conversely, when you create a NEW part...the new body will adopt a new color and you will see a new part added to the part list (bottom left).

Thanks Coleman and Viru.  Very helpful.  Much easier to start off the right way with a new part.  Not sure how I missed this in the tutorials.
